چکیده
People’s reactions to coincidences are often cited as an illustration of the irrationality of human reasoning about chance. We argue that coincidences may be better understood in terms of rational statistical inference, based on their functional role in processes of causal discovery and theory revision. We present a formal definition of coincidences in the context of a Bayesian framework for causal induction: a coincidence is an event that provides support for an alternative to a currently favored causal theory, but not necessarily enough support to accept that alternative in light of its low prior probability. We test the qualitative and quantitative predictions of this account through a series of experiments that examine the transition from coincidence to evidence, the correspondence between the strength of coincidences and the statistical support for causal structure, and the relationship between causes and coincidences. Our results indicate that people can accurately assess the strength of coincidences, suggesting that irrational conclusions drawn from coincidences are the consequence of overestimation of the plausibility of novel causal forces. We discuss the implications of our account for understanding the role of coincidences in theory change. 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. 0010-0277/$ see front matter 2006 Elsevier B.V. متن کاملCoincidences Are not Accidental: a Theorem
In this paper, we formalize and prove the statement that coincidences cannot be accidental, a statement that underlies many useful heuristics in mathematics and physics. Our proof uses a version of Kolmogorov complexity, a technique originally developed to describe randomness and “accidentalness”. 1 Coincidences are not Accidental: A Useful Empirical Fact Coincidences happen. متن کاملInfants' Early Understanding of Coincidences
Coincidences are surprising events that can provide learners with the opportunity to revise their theories about how the world works. In the current research, we investigate whether infants are truly sensitive to coincidences, detecting these events even when they cannot be predicted mere probabilities. In addition, we explore whether this sensitivity is translated into action, encouraging infa...
متن کاملPairs of codes with prescribed Hamming distances and coincidences
The main problem of coding theory is to construct codes with large Hamming-distances between the code-words. In this work we describe a fast algorithm for generating pairs of q-ary codes with prescribed pairwise Hamming-distances and coincidences (for a letter s 2 f0; 1; : : : ; q 1g, the number of s-coincidences between codewords a and b is the number of letters s in the same positions both in...
